There may be reasons for the behavior though. What's the temperature inside the coop when they go in? They may be avoiding the heat. There possibly could be mites. Check once it's dark with a flashlight to see if anything is crawling around inside the coop. Look at any joints and cracks, also the underside of the roosting bars.
 
Last might mu husband was laughing, as it has become apparent that one of my six chickens will sleep in the doorway to the roost. Head facing out into the coop. And it is a different one each night.

That’s funny, ours do the exact same thing. Every evening we go to close the pop door and there is almost always one guarding the door.
