I am new to raising chickens. I have a total of 3. A lot right? I have a RIR, Buff Orphington, and a Black Copper Maran. My Buff was kind of the runt of the three and my RIR has always been the protector of the other two. Now the Buff is going after my RIR. Any idea why?

Welcome to BYC! How old are your chickens? And are all three of them hens? How big is their coop and/or run? How serious is the BOs aggession? There could be a number of reasons this is happening. It could be rooster rivalry, or a rooster attempting to breed with one of your hens, or they could be overcrowded in their coop and/or run. Overcrowding can quickly lead to aggression, feather plucking, and even cannibalism. If none of these things is an issue, and if the BO's aggression is not too serious, it may just be an issue of natural pecking order.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

There is a pecking order in every flock. And size has nothing to do with anything. Make sure they have enough room and are not cramped in. Give them things to do to break up boredom....pecking blocks, mirrors, hanging veggies, things to climb on, and plenty of space. Watch for any serious aggression and separate the meanies out if need be.

Good luck with your flock!

They are young not sure how old. Not sure if they are all females. (I sure hope so). Their coop is 8x8. The BO was attacking while free ranging. The BO runs up on the RIR with claws at her head or jumps at her face to face.

You will get the hang of BYC pretty soon. I was lost for years however. LOL

Just give them as much room as you can, and if you truly have a mean bird, you may need to rehome her or use pinless peepers on her.
