I have a 2 year old speckled sussex that has not started laying again this year. I don't keep a light in the coop so she and her flock mates had a rest over winter. The others started laying again back in January/March.

She had frost bite on her comb in February and is still growing back the little tips so I thought that might have been responsible for the delay. She is eating and drinking normally, normal poos, no lice or mites, clean feet, red comb, very active. She likes to inspect the nest box after the other chickens. The past few weeks she's been going in the nest box for 15-20 minutes but not laying. I have a camera set up so I know she isn't eating the eggs (unless she's super stealthy and only eats her own eggs). There also isn't any sign of yolk or shell in the box.

She seems well so I don't suspect she's egg bound or has EYP. Any ideas what is up with this chicken?

They are all on a regular layer feed, have access to fresh water, get treats sparingly. She is my most active, friendly and inquisitive chicken.

Worried in might be salpingitis but I haven't seen any lash eggs.

I have never had this breed but she looks healthy. If they eat and drink and walk around , I figure they are good.

How do you know she isn’t laying eggs? I have no idea which specific birds are laying.

It is hard to know for sure when one seems to not be laying, but spends time in the nest box. I had a hen once who spent an hour every 2-3 days in the nest box as if she was laying an egg. She never did. This is called a false layer, and eggs can be laid into the abdomen instead of coming out. It can be common after infectious bronchitis virus, which my hens had early in life. If you can watch her while she is in the nest box to make sure that is what is happening, it might be confirmed. Here is some info about false layers:

Thank you so much! I will check this out

Also, I can't tell from the article, but is this something that can happen even if they have laid before? Btw this is the same chicken you gave me advice about before when she had frostbite. Thank you so much for all your help!
