Ok so I have a chicken who thinks she needs to set. So my wife tossed a couple call ducks under her to see what happens. Anyone ever do anything similar? Will this work? How long will it take for the eggs to hatch?

The whole thing is a little creepy to me. The whole ducks thinking the chicken is their mommys and such but now I'm curious to see what happens.

Yes, a broody hen will sit on any egg.Alot of people use hens to hatch peafowl eggs.It will take 28 days to hatch the duck eggs.Take care.

Make sure to mist the eggs under the hen starting around day 10 or so.

I tried that once before, and will never use a chicken to incubate duck eggs ever again. Not one of the ducklings hatched out, from humidity issues since chickens dont swim and bring moisture back to the nest. Hatched them in an incubator myself and got 75% hatch rates.

By the way, Call ducks hatch on day 26-27.

I hatched 5 ducklings out 3 weeks ago under a standard cochin hen. She was a proud mom. We called them chuckles. I never misted them under her. There were no problems. Good Luck!!!

I hatched ducks under my hens. I didn't mist either & had no problems. I wonder if you would need to mist if you lived in a less humid climate? The only problem I had is that some of the other hens starting attacking the baby ducks after they hatched. One of them ended up with some bald spots on its head before I removed them from the coop.
