Hi everybody, Just a few lines to introduce myself here. I retired a few years ago and my wife said I needed a hobby or another jobby to get me out of the house and out of her hair so I started messing with some chickens...now my hobby has turned into a jobby. I started with a mixed flock and soon decided I loved the Heritage Breed Rhode Island Reds, But I also found they were hard to find. Many people have production breed or some kind of mix (most common mix is Black Copper Moron because many people think they have a RIR roo when it's actually a Copper so I set out to redevelop and hatch the purest line of Heritage Breed RIRs I could. I have been line breeding some RIRs I found on an old farm here in NC owned by a lady in her 70s. I'm hatching and selling some of them now and I'm so surprised at how docile and loving these birds are...TOTALLY OPPOSITE of most of the stories I heard about the RIR breed. I'm in the Greensboro, Burlington, NC area. I don't ship anything yet but if you would like to see my chickens or buy some chicks give me a call and come see me. 336-449-9574. I like meeting other bird brains...I mean chicken people.

Hi Paul. I'm excited to see someone working on bringing back the old lines of RIR. Looks like you have some good stock to work with. I noted a brown head stripe on some of your chicks. I've read (some place, some time long ago) that a male RIR chick will never have the head stripe, while a female RIR chick will, or won't have it. And, in some strains, the head stripe can be used as a reliable auto sexing trait for the RIR. What say you? What does your experience say regarding head stripe and gender in the strain you are working with?

I've never met a RIR that was not a fowl tempered beast. (pun intended) But, do believe the heritage RIR is not likely to be. Based on that assumption, I started some Buck Eyes last spring, and am very pleased with the mahogany coloring of the roo, and the temperament of all my BE's. However, my hens are not as rich in coloring as your hen in pic #4. !! She is stunning.
