(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Not entirely new but we have been chicken-less for quite a few years now, ever since our original small group of girls passed at around seven years old.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Currently we have twelve in three separate brooders and have pre-ordered some from our local feed store. Chickens are a hot commodity nowadays so we jumped on the chance to put our name in for some special chicks, the first arriving 3/27 I believe.
(3) What breeds do you have? In our brooders we currently have three White-Crested Polish, two Barnevelder, an Austra White, A Light Brahma, one Brown and one White Leghorn, a Black Sex-link, A Crèvecœur and a Black Maran Sex-link. On order we have a Fibro Easter Egger, A couple Olive Egger's and some Americauna. We underestimated the power of chicken math.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Raising them is likely my absolute favorite, seeing them grow from little fuzzy chicky-nuggs into sassy hens is a joy and its one of the reasons we are looking into starting our own breeding and hatching service. I'm looking at you, Ayam Cemani!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening is a solid go to for a good time, anything involving our pets or a sunny beach and I have a small obsession with surfing even though I'm forced to confine that to our January vacations for-sadly-Idaho is landlocked.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Well, It's mainly me an my parents getting into mischief if I'm being entirely honest. We live in relative harmony with each-other in a historic district that came with great neighbors and big backyards. We have three dogs, two Golden Retrievers and a ancient Mini Schnauzer who may have a few screws lose but whom we still love and three cats, all that good mystery mix you get from the shelter. My life revolves mostly around my Niece and Nephew, who I love dearly and spend way to much money on and I'm technically an Author I guess, though I dont think I'll fully accept that until my book is on the shelf.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this site when we got our first group of Bantam hens and gosh, that had to be ages ago because I got them in high-school and I'm in my mid-twenties now; time really flies. Now that we are getting back into building a flock, I figured it'd be a good idea to come back and catch upon all the new ideas out there.
