I had trouble looking online for Cantley, Quebec chicken laws so I thought I would post it here to save anyone else time from emailing them:

10.5.1 Number of animals All farmhouses must be located on land of at least 20,000 square meters and at least 90 meters wide. The farmhouse may include a maximum of 6 goats, or 4 sheep, or 4 donkeys, or 4 horses or 4 deer, to which an additional animal may be added for each 4,000 square meters of additional area. The farm can also include 30 small animals among rabbits, chickens, turkeys, quails, pheasants, geese or ducks. An additional small animal can be added for every 250 square meters of additional area, up to a maximum of 100 animals. Notwithstanding the preceding paragraphs, a small farm comprising only two horses or two goats or two sheep or two donkeys or two deer or four rabbits or four chickens or four turkeys or four quails or four pheasants or four geese or four ducks must be situated on a land of at least 12,000 square meters and a width of 90 meters. One additional animal from those mentioned above is allowed for every 4,000 square meters in excess of 12,000 square meters.

So basically that is about 5 acres if you want up to 30 chickens and 3 if you want 4. I can keep 5 hens in a tiny backyard of 350m2 which is 0.9 acres in Gatineau and I do not see any limits for chickens (including roosters) for a property of 2 acres in Gatineau/8093 m2 so will be looking for a country home in the Gatineau area (I will email the city before buying it) around the time my son starts elementary school in about 1-2 years.

My pleasure! Also in case anyone searches in the future this is the gist of what I found when reading into each municipality the required number of acres to have roosters:

Val-Des-Monts: 5 acres
Lochaber: 5 acres
Gatineau including Aylmer, Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and Masson-Angers: 2 acres
Cantley: 5 acres

For Pontiac 5 laying hens can be kept on a property with land size of 2000 m2. No chicks (under 6 weeks) allowed and they fine $300 if conditions aren't met. Roosters ofcourse aren't allowed, here are more requirements https://municipalitepontiac.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Bylaw_04-20.pdf Roosters are allowed on properties zoned agricultural.

I was told by email for L'Ange Gardien that you can send an address to them to see if roosters would be allowed. I asked how many acres and they said it would depend on the address.

For Chelsea I'm not checking because I gave my friend a baby bantam cochin rooster when I thought it was 2 acres and she has about that much. She had trouble getting rid of a hen who turned out to be a standard sized rooster and ended up having to give him to someone who ate him. But I know in the city you need a lot of 700m2 to have hens (min 3 max 5)

By the way I did try to convince her that at least the rooster became someone's meal. I appreciate all the people on this website who are able to give roosters a good life before they become dinner.

Also she did mention to us something about her reading somewhere the requirements for Chelsea so I think she knows the requirements and might have already rehome the rooster if needed.

Coming back to your opening post: The quoted rule seems to deal with agricultural settings but not with the normal backyard chicken case in residential areas with 1 acre plots? It would be quite backward of the Cantley Municipality to oppose backyard chickens while promoting the country living live style? I wrote to them and asked. Lets see what they say.

Hello! I received feedback from a person called Yannick Laberge of the Cantley municipality. He confirmed that one is permitted to have 5 chicken in an enclosure on your residential land in Cantley. He did not mention a minimum land size (I asked for a 1ac plot) nor did he mention permits. I'll go with this for now.

That’s the same guy that replied to me. I can have 5 hens on 350 m2 in Gatineau (0.0865 acre so not even 0.1 acre) so I’m waiting for a house to come on the market in Gatineau with at least 2 acres so I can have unlimited hens and roosters and there is only one but husband doesn’t like that it is a 2 story and unfinished basement
