I'm looking for advice on our "broody" hen who seems to have just hurt her leg. She has been brooding lately, which I want to discourage; I lifted her out of the nesting box, but she jumped, landed in the coop and the rooster freaked out and jumped at her and on top of her. They both hopped out of the coop (which is a step down), and then I saw that she was limping. Does anyone recommend anything to help, or just assume that it will naturally work itself out? It bothers me to see her limping around now, the poor thing!

Thank you for your help.

I have a couple of hens who shoot out of the nest box like that--they have almost knocked me down. She will probably do fine with her hurt leg. I recently had a hen who injured a leg, and held it up hopping on the good leg for over a month. She was able to eat, drink, forage, and get up to a short roost at night. Now she is fine. It may be a sprain. If she isn't eating or getting around well, I would then put her in a dog crate to rest it with food/ water. But exercise will probably help.

As Eggcessive said, most times they heal themselves pretty well. If you've checked to make sure there is no break and she doesn't seem to be in pain [look at the eyes, they'll tell you quicker than anything else], then there are a couple of things you can do. One nothing, except watch her and make sure it doesn't get worse or she becomes the one the rest pick on or you can give her a vitamin in their water. Even Sav-A-Chick is good. If you have human Super B Complex in the house, you can even take one and crush it and add it to a gallon of water. Bs work on the nerves and healing muscle damage and strain.
