Chicken math got me real good

Nice pics! Wish my son were into the birds, too. Really nice job on the coop- walk in , small wire mesh, nice roof, attractive. Looks like a good upgrade from the tiny original. 👍

10 birds isn't too many especially if you add 2-3 chicks every spring to keep the egg supply steady. If you can acquire a broody hen

Careful, careful... That is pure chicken math talking. (I want to listen). Keep it fun, remember the reasons for the original plan!

Starting with a small flock and adding 2-3 chicks each spring keeps the egg supply steady (and sadly if birds free range there will usually be some losses/attrition).

I told someone on another forum to start with a few birds so he could add 2-3 more each spring. So he bought 6 pullets and then his brother ordered 30 straight run chicks from a hatchery! Guess the brother thought it was cheaper to buy in volume so why not? 6 pullets are enjoyable however 36 chicks in a first flock (including cockerels) makes what should be a fun experience of discovery into an overwhelming headache.

Thanks. That's my youngest son. He would live in the coop/run if I let him. He absolutely loves tending to them. It's fun to see him help out and good character building.

Oh! And i forgot to comment that i find it really funny/cute that in addition to all your golden birds, you also have a golden dog
Buff orps were what I wanted to get, too, but i didn't hold out
They get along well, for the most part. We had the Beagle on a leash for a couple weeks, while free ranging, to make sure. She wanted to play with them, but dogs play a little rough for chickens. Then one day off the leash, my boldest bird walked right up, pecked her in the nose.:lau and chased her around the yard. Ever since, they get along like best friends. The sight of a chicken chasing a dog makes me smile.
