Chicken Mating?

I have an 18 wk old hen & a roo about the same age. At about what age will he start doing his thing? Or do they wait until the hen is laying? I'm new to chickens and have been wondering about it.

Some fast maturing breeds like Jaers will try to breed anything that moves by 8 weeks. It really depends on the breed.
