Chicken Newb with lots of questions -- Ohio :D

Hello everyone!!

I am very excited to be here, I was actually referred her from one of my friends. This winter I will be purchasing some land and I can't wait to start having various animals. (I grew up with horses/dogs/cats/rabbits etc)

Chickens will be a totally new ball game for me! I am looking to raise chickens just for eggs for now, maybe eventually when my son gets older (he's only 1 currently) he may want to do 4H with them or something.

I am sure you guys will get tired of all my posts after a while, I'll be asking TONs of questions.


As of right now my family is fresh out of the military My husband just got out after being in for 8 years, I have a wonderful 1 year old son and I am 17 weeks pregnant with another on the way <3

Then I also have two Siberian Huskies

This is Alice, she is 9 months old


This is Opie, he's 2.5 years old

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sincere thanks to your husband for his time in service. Two important things to mention up front. Dogs + chickens = dead chickens. You never hear of chickens killing any dogs. It's best if they NEVER meet.

Second chicken wire only keeps chickens inside. It does nothing to stop predators. The best investment is 1/2" hardware cloth - it's more expensive, but, much stronger, and lasts much longer than flimsy chicken wire.

The Learning Center is a great place to start a chicken education.

Third, thank you to your husband for his service, and thank you to you for all that is involved with being a military wife.

I'm not 100% sure yet, I have a few months to decide. As of now I'm thinking chicks but that may change as a learn more information One of my friends referred me because I was asking her a thousand questions. I'm just happy I have time to prepare. I don't really like going into anything without learning at least the basics first.

Just today I was telling my husband we need to get "Batman" chickens.....he got all excited until I realized I was just saying it wrong haha!

Oh no, my dogs will NEVER be near them. Huskies are known for having a high prey drive. I plan on building a super secure coop and keeping the dogs in a different area. I still want the backup plan with the secure coop due to my white husky being an escape artist but I he's the one I don't think would hurt the chickens but I don't want to take any chances. The will only get to eat eggs

batman chickens ....!

i have 4 banties and i love them! if you want a pet the OEGB is a really recomended breed as is silkies.

My neighbor had a husky and he had a very high prey drive and ate ducklings TWO AT A TIME. He also got my rabbit and a bunch of chickens, he also killed 4-5 of the neighbor's turkeys at 10 dollars a peice!! he got rehomed and now I am really happy. Otherwise he was a great dog, huskies are really cute and gentle- as well as photogenic!
