Our family just started our back yard flock a week ago. We have 6 girls and tonight I heard them squealing so I bolted out the door and saw a neighborhood cat who was so determined to have one that she gashed the tail feather area and its bleeding. I don't know what to do or watch for or how to prevent this. The girls are young - store clerk said about 5-6 weeks. They must have been too close to the chicken wire and the cat reached in and scratched her. Any help??

Chicken wire will not protect your birds. You should use 1/4" hardware cloth.I would also set a trap for the cats.

Okay . Thank you. Ill pass that along to the builder hubs. Do you use it all around the run? Over head? The cat lives next door:/

Thank you. Do you have any suggestion on how to treat the injured chick ?

You might consider adding a small pattern wire along the bottom of their pen to keep preditors from reaching in. If the bleeding is minimal, clean the wound and place some first aid cream like (bacitracin) to help prevent infection. We have even had to add stitches a time of two. Good Luck!!!
