I have been reading BYC threads since April, but only joined a short while ago. Finally have time to write up a post, so here we go.
We live in an old farm house that had a subdivision grow up around it. In fact, we have an easement to get to the street from our house, and have to drive through a (soon to be), school's parking lot to get to the street. Even though we live in the city, we are grandfathered in for small agriculture (we were told that goats are as big as we can go). This year, when my husband asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day, while I slept, I apparently muttered "Chiiiiiickeeennnnsss." this was something that I had told him while awake, but I think he was hoping for a different answer.
We went to IFA the Saturday before Mother's Day to pick out "2 or 3" chicks, which I interpreted to mean "at least 4." We came home with an "Araucana" (Penny), a "GLW" (Lacy), a BO (Ophelia) and a RIR(henrietta). After further research I knew that the Araucana was an EE, which was fine by me. The chicks were 1 to 2 weeks when we got them. After a few weeks, I convinced my husband that four chicks would not be enough to feed the nine people in our family and we should get one more, so I went out and bought a PBR (Peaber) who was about a week older than the others (so we had ages two and a half to four weeks). Another week passed and Henrietta's comb and wattles started to look really pinkish. After searching here, I figured out that Henrietta is actually Henry (we are still debating whether or not to keep him).
Well, I wanted five chickens, at least, so I just had to go get two more babies to replace Henry. I came home with a blue Andalusian and another RIR (Nox and Ruby). These two are crazy, at least to me, but for some reason they love my husband, so he unintentionally has two chickens of his very own. As of this moment they are three and a half weeks old.
A week and a half ago, tragedy struck when our temporary run blew over during a windstorm. The entire structure collapsed ontop of Penny, the EE. She was everyone's favorite, and we all had a really hard time with her loss. In order to make myself and the kids feel better, I got two more EE's from a local breeder this past Thursday. They are one week old today.
So, "2-3" has become eight. They all seem to be pullets except Henry, and the one week olds are probably too early to tell though they are sexed as pullets. The "GLW" is a confused chicken. She (I think) has a single comb and has feathered backwards for a GLW (brown that has darker colors coming in through the center instead of black with golden lacing coming in). We have toyed with the idea of her being a brown leghorn, a partridge rock, or something else. Eventually, I will post something in the "What Breed or Gender" forum...
So, that's my chicken story. As for our family, we have seven kids between us; two boys and five girls that range in age from 22 months to 19 years. The baby is my DH and my only child together. He has four from a prior marriage and I have two. He and I will be celebrating our three year anniversary in a few weeks.
