4 year old welsummer hen, noticed her eye was closed 2-3 days ago. Brought her inside because she was shaking, not eating or drinking, and it was cold out. She still refuses to eat/drink unless I put water on her beak. Tried giving her some poultry vitamins and electrolytes, she drank some but not much. Now she’s swallowing air.. not sure what to do to help her.

Does she still lay eggs? Has she been molting? Have you added any new birds recently who might have carried in an illness? Is her tail held up or down? Can you weigh her on a kitchen scale or hold her and weigh your self to get a weight? I would mix a little wet feed and water to make a mash to offer her, and a little soft cooked egg. Hold some water up to her beak in a spoon or dropper and try to dry some into her beak slowly. Electrolytes or sugar water would be good. Check her crop to see if it is empty, full, firm or squishy. Does she have any lice or mites on her skin?

crop empty, couldn’t see any lice or mites. I tried to give her some cooked egg but she just pecked at it. Used a dropper, she didn’t drink much from it.. Tail is up, not down, no new birds, she feels a bit lighter than usual. She molted two months ago, hasn’t laid any eggs for a few months. Can try to weigh her

What do her droppings look like? Are her urates white or yellow? Can you open the closed eye, and look for anything including bubbles or foam in either eye?

Dropping are runny with some green spots, she won’t let me touch her eye but the other eye looks fine, i’ll try again when she wake up. A bit of blood on her beak, she might’ve been pecked. Her urates are white.

Sometimes applying some saline or lubricant drops may help. Eyes can be pecked easily and they also may get some debris inside. Occasionally keeping an eye closed can be due to irritation or other things. It is good that she is opening the eye more.
