Chicken Parenting

Are rooster and hens nice to their chicks or do the baby chicks need to be separated from their parents? I would like some baby chickens so just trying to plan ahead.

I know they will peck other chicks that aren't theirs right?

The broody mama will be until she decides the babies are big enough to fend for themselves. Some roosters are very nice to their kids, others, not so much...
