chicken raising always dramatastic?

ACK!!!!
Shiva's gonna give us all apoplexy!
I came back from a Dr's appt this morning and Penny's in the chair trying to be broody. She starts to scream at me and she's like gurgling...so I turn her upside down like she's a lawn dart and all this water comes out...She was absolutely FINE when I left!
Yep! Dramatastic just about covers it all.

heh, not so much Shiva giving us apoplexy so much as us giving ourselves apoplexy! So far every panicy moment has a human at it's root. Either over reacting (me when I first let him out for the afternoon and wasn't sure he'd come home) or doing something stupid (putting Maggie in with the chickies, or the lead getting hooked to the weaker jump ring, not the solid d-ring)..

*sigh* Not Shiva, just us.. *grin*

Ok, if human mistakes have to have it, how bout this?

When I was a newbie, I had wanted chickens so bad, but didnt have a heat lamp or even anything that would work as such, but brought them home from the feed store anyhow.

We keep our house warm in the winter/spring, but not quite THAT warm, so I put them in a box on the stove with the hood light on. Well, they were plenty warm, but I had a rag in there for them to snuggle in.
I had one that just wouldnt settle down and cried and leaped around. I think she was a little older than just 2 or 3 days, and she had never been in with the other two before, they had been in separate bins, so she FELT alone I guess. Cried her little heart out.

Well I underestimated how high she could jump. I nursed her for several hours, put her back in the box, went into the bathroom, hear a ruckus. She had jumped out of the box, and fell all the way down from the stove, and hurt herself pretty badly. I think she dislocated her wing, and hurt her foot. I still carry guilt for that one but luckily I dont think she broke anything, I was lucky in that respect. The other two slept away this whole time...snuggled in the corner of the box, so she wasnt cold, just scared.

She is ok, but to this day doesnt like heights of more than about 18 inches. And I have to put her down carefully, her foot still aches if she jumps too hard, and her wing pops out of place occasionally. sigh....
So, yea...I know what you mean...I wasnt sure she was gonna make it there for a while....

I'm really glad that she's okay though! (good thing chickens don't fly a lot!)

Boy, our chicks were so boring, other than the fact that by 4 weeks, they took over our guest bathroom and turned into trampling Treat Pirates.

They are still boring, but then again, they don't free-range, and we don't have dogs, or children who leave the gates open, etc...

And Southern28Chick, a chicken being born blind isn't drama, drama requires stupid mistakes and panic.. wink A chicken being born blind is a challenge. And a really lovely pullet, she's gorgeous!

She sure was a challenge too. If me or DH had any guts we would have put her out of her misery in her first couple of days. Good thing we were to *chicken* to do it. She is gorgeous and she's the happiest blind chicken you'll ever see!!!

Penny flew from her chair into the dining room without touching the ground because I yelled "TREATS!
It's the funniest thing to see her fly all over the place.
Even Obelisk will fly from her chair to the kitchen.
