Hi I am new to chicken keeping...I love the idea of sand for my girls...BUT so many people have said sand can be unhealthy and hold bacteria etc...Any help on what to put down much appreciated...I also considered concrete with wood chips...but that must get really dirty too. We Live in an area that gets hot and has a lot of flies....

Hot and dry or hot and wet?
Putting your location in your profile can help folks give better answers/suggestions.

Sand can work OK in dry climates....but long term it's not the best idea.
Pea shingle is a worse idea.

Best long term solution for a run:
Here's a great description of contents and how to manage organic 'bedding' in a run or coop...and there's a great video of what it looks like.
