I am so new at chickens. I have a coop being built in a couple of weeks, for six of what I thought were all female layers. Time will tell on that. But back to question, is it better to place your run on grass or plain earth a bed of pea gravel? I will appreciate all in put. My builder doesn't want to move things once he builds it. Oh how my husband knows me.
Thanks Pye

Thank you Nancy for the info. Makes good sense,I believe with all the fun and folly of the chickens I have lost my ability to use common sense. I put them in my freshly planted garden as a quick fix till the run and coop is built..... no veggies anymore, except they have no liking for strawberries, celery, and onions all else is gone .So common sense if I used it would have answered my own question. Again I thank you for the input.

We had fun figuring out where and what and ended up enclosing a 12 x 20 chain link run on grass. We covered half the roof area with tarp and half with chicken wire. Buried wire around the base, hardware cloth on sides, etc. In less than 2 weeks, the grass is almost gone with the exception of some hardy weed like thingees! We have added sand to the half under the tarp and will probably have to do the rest in sand or pebbles or something . . . love to hear what people like best for their chickens. We have a 3' long piece of railroad tie in the run for them to play on and they LOVE it when we turn it over and all the worms and bugs are exposed! We have 12 Bovan hens. Enjoy!!!
