Chicken Run Plants

I built a box to put plants in for my chickens made out of 2x4s and ¼" hardware cloth. I can't rememberwhat I can plant in there that would be good for the chickens. What can I plant that will grow through ¼" mesh.

1/4 " isn't going to let much thicker than grass get through. I grow hard red winter wheat in trays and that's pretty narrow so that should work. It grows fast too. Then they can just bite it off when it comes through.

I've only laid the wheat right on the tray, never planted it, so just guessing it wouldn't need to be planted very deeply.
