Chicken Run Stuff?

I have wondered this, because we heat with wood we have ash available in winter all the time, but don't have it much in summer when perhaps it's more useful.
I've started putting my ashes from the wood burner into 5 gal buckets with a lid to have it handy in the summer. We do have bonfires during the summer too...but sometimes "other stuff" gets tossed in that burn ring that I prefer the girls not play in... Makes for perty colored flames...but I would imagine toxic to the critters...

**COOL ashes into plastic bucket!** I put the hot ashes into a my metal bucket to cool first...

So, I'm getting ready for chickens and I realized something -- I don't have enough roost space in my chicken coop for the nights. Let me explain. With my last flock, I didn't block the nesting boxes before they started laying, so they always slept in the nesting boxes, which got pretty annoying. But now, I'm going to be blocking off the nesting boxes, and opening them up a few weeks before they start laying. I have one roost inside of my coop that's about 3 ft wide, but it's not enough to fit the eight chickens that I'm planning on getting. What should I do? There isn't very much room in the upper loft area where the chickens will sleep, so I don't know how I would add another roost.
And sorry, it's night so the pictures aren't good. Maybe I can take more tomorrow.
