Chicken Saddles. How thick? Layers?

My rooster loves his hens and is very protective. He is also so sweet. But he is a pretty BIG boy. Probably weighs 10 pounds, I rather pick up a turkey! His hens are about his size and he has 6 lovely ladies. But he makes them bald and hardly "rides" them. And never in public, such a gentleman.

One hen has small wounds, but nothing to bad. One is bald under her wings. And 2 are mildly bald.


I bought some material today. It is ruff and strong, but at the same time soft. How thick should I make it? Would 2 layers be enough?

Do you know what kind of fabric it is that you bought? I sew a lot and would be able to tell you better if I knew what kind of fabric it is

I looked up one of the brands it says 55% Cotton and 45% Polyester. I also got outdoor resistant thread. I haven't sewn in a long time and neither has my mother. I want to get back into it.

I would at least double it, I am going to make some for my girls too but I am just going to cut up some of my husbands old jeans and double that

I've used cut up old jeans as well and it works nicely in one or 2 layers depending on the thickness. I've used thin corduroy on one side and cotton blend on the other so it's reversible with 2 different prints. Sometimes I use just 2 layers of cotton for summer time use and warmer stuff for winter use. I also like mine a bit longer down the hens back, so I add a tail notch. These are smaller for my bantams.

THANK YOU! I am going to be doing the same thing. Making them longer and doing a curved bottom. I have to get the sewing machine out and clean it up.
