Very helpful and speedy replies. Sturdy denim material, really holds up to those Rooster claws and spurs.

I even got one that includes shoulders, to cover those hens that have bald or damaged shoulders.

I have 7 hens and 1 Rooster, and he really likes to spread the love around!

I was going to ask about saddles this morning until I saw this thread LOL I was wondering how do you make the saddle fit right when the hen does not have much of a tail to help hold it on?
I have an EE girl that is my banty roo's fav and she is getting really bald but no skin showing yet - but he has broken alot of her tail feathers off.
Also after I put the saddle on how long does she need to wear it? and will he still mate with her -with it on?

Crazy- I don't think that the saddle will protect tail feathers. It's designed to protect their backs and upper part of their sides from the roo's spurs and his treading.

I know the one that I made came down enough that it deflected off from the tail feathers. If your making them yourself you can always adjust the pattern to cover further down.

Feathers on my girls grew back in three weeks.

I know the saddles dont protect the tail feathers - the problem I am having with poor Zelda is that she does not have much of a tail to help hold the saddle on LOL I guess I could make one that has holes for her legs to go through and holes to put her wings in that will kinda wrap around here??

so if I get this right and it fits I leave it on for about 3-4 weeks?

will Clyde still try and mate with her ?

or will he just move on to another girl ?

This one is only held on by the wings bands.

There is nothing that goes around the tail. So you should be alright with just the wings.

I ordered the "extra-long" that she makes and it does cover the tail feathers. Or you can just order the "standard." If making your own, I suppose you can just make it longer.

The saddle is held on, very snugly, by elastic straps that go under the wings, and then snap back onto the saddle.

My grandmother would not believe it if she could see my hens with their saddles on...............

is there anyone on the board that sells them ? I have a ton of material I dont know why and I have a brand new sewing machine that is two years old used once LOL

I will try to measure zelda when DH gets home and try to see what i come up with before Clyde gets down the skin.
