I just got 2 hens that I am free ranging in my back yard. I've been trying to figure out how to fertilize my grass without hurting the hens (and the eggs I eat!). So far my plan is to spread Black Hen composted chicken manure(2-3-2) and spray Miracle Gro water soluble lawn food (36-6-6) using the hose. I have a fairly small back yard, about 1,500 feet.

Also how much poop do 2 chickens "deposit"? I wonder how much fertilizer benefit I get from them?

have you considered Alaskan fish fertilizer, its just fish emulsion.just dilute it and spray on lawn and water in, sorry it smells real bad though. I know my grass realy thrived when I tossed some out after doing all my potted plants. I realy can't see it hurting the chickens any.

That would work, but it's very expensive for the amount of nitrogen you get.

Thanks!

Quite a bit of poop -- I have 2 hens also. But I don't think it is enough to fert a significant portion of the yard. I composted the poop/shavings and put it in my veggie garden (after it was out all winter, long enough to kill off any microscopic critters), but I still have to fert with miracle grow, composted veggie scraps, coffee grounds, etc. When they poop directly onto a grassy area all day (in their travel cage with the open bottom), it will kill off some of the grass for about 1-2 weeks, then it grows back stronger, more vigorously, and a deeper green.

I don't fert my lawn so I can't comment directly on that.
