Hi! I'm new to this, so I apologize for my ignorance, but could you please tell me how the chicken swaps work? Are you allowed to go and make cash purchases, even if you don't have anything to trade?

Yes, that's exactly right. You can just show up at the show and buy anything you want. Bring cash and a box (or 6) to take your goodies home.
