Chicken temperaments?

We are getting ready to incubate our second round of eggs. The first time we did this, we took the chickens to a local farm once they were a few months old. Now, we are ready to have our own coup! Is there a breed that not only lays good eggs (for eating), but is also mild tempered and better with children who love animals???

We have black sex links, RIR's and barred rocks that I can literally walk right up to and pick up. They are still a little weary of our 4 year old though (he gets excited and tries to chase.) I think just about any chickens can be tamed enough to be used to being handled as long as you hatch them out yourself and handle them daily.
