They are perfect.

I really like cat crates which are hard sided, and can open from the top as well as through the front. I would also put something in the bottom to keep the bird from slipping, like an old towel. The cat shelter I volunteer at is always overwhelmed with extra crates people dontate, you might call around and see if you can get some for free.

One thing to be aware of is too much cage height if transporting very many birds in the same cage. Had a recent experience. Someone was traveling nearby to buy some birds, I was looking for a way to get birds near to where she was from. She graciously offered to bring my birds back with her. She had a large wire dog cage, suitable for a great dane, wrapped by a tarp in the bed of a pickup truck. There was ample floor space for all the birds, all same breed and size. During the return trip they climbed into a pile and smothered two hens. If they had been in a lower height cage(chicken crate) they would not have been able to play king of the mountain. I suspect the chicken crate is shaped as it is to both maximize hauling capacity and reduce losses. I would not recommend a standard chicken crate for transport to shows because of potential feather damage, but for general use they are very handy, I use wooden turkey crates for my large fowl brahmas.

Big medicine brought up a good point about the dangers of piling. You want the cage height low enough to prevent the birds from being able to jump up on each other. If you look at the commercially available chicken crate they are only 11" tall for chickens and 15" for turkeys.
