Chicken walking like a penguin after dog attack

My chicken flew into our neighbor’s yard and was attacked by their dog. My husband was able to retrieve her and she had a bite on her back (more puncture or tear wound). We administered first aid, watched her, and she layed an egg the next day. Her wound healed quickly and well. Since the attack she has been squatting and walking like a penguin - and hasn’t layed an egg. I was concerned about egg bound but her condition has not worsened. Her eyes are clear, she is eating and drinking, pooping, and seems generally fine. What should I do?

How old is she, and how long ago was the dog bite? More than likely she has some sort of internal injury, possibly to her back or hips. Chickens who waddle or have an upright stance may have salpingitis or other reproductive disorders. Most times we won’t know what until after death when a necropsy can be performed at home or by the state vet. I would offer her 1/4 tablet human B complex crushed into some food daily for a few weeks to see if she has any improvement. Also, check her internally for a stuck egg or other obstruction.

When my 1 year old hen was chased and injured by a neighbor’s dog after she decided to escape our yard, she limped a bit, but suffered an injury to her reproductive organs. She was the best daily layer of XL eggs, but she stopped that day and went into a sudden molt. When she started laying again 3 months later, her eggs were always shell-less or very thin shelled. She died early of a suspected reproductive disorder.

It has been 2 weeks since the attack. She just turned 1. I’ve checked her internally and have generally examined her skeleton and she doesn’t seemed bothered when I touch her, but there must be some sort of injury. Next step would be taking her to the vet, which I may do next weed if there is no change. Thanks for the recommendations and I’m sorry to hear about your hen.

Let us know what the vet thinks if you take her in. I hope with time and rest she will start walking normally and laying again. Has she shown any feather loss in the coop or other signs of early molting?
