Chicken Wing Injury

My one Isa browns left wing is drooping down. I am assuming broken. She is young just born this spring. Can I do anything at home to help fix this? Do they heal naturally? or do I have to put her down?

Welcome to BYC. I'm sorry to hear about your bird

Could you bring the bird inside, and set her in an area where she can't further damage her wing, with food and water provided? Could we get a few photos of her wing? Did this occur over a few days, or did it occur suddenly?

If it is indeed a fracture, how we go about treating it, and the prognosis of it will depend on where the fracture occurred, and the severity of it. At some point, you'll need to carefully assess the bird's wing to locate where the fracture occurred.

Thank you! I will try to get a picture. It appears to be dislocated right by the shoulder it is hanging low/slightly loose to the body.

Pictures would be good. When you say shoulder, do you mean where the humerus connects o the body, or where the humerus connects to the ulna, or in the middle of the humerus?

Humerus where it connects to the body. My husband has her in a "splint" he just made so it's hard to take a picture to show. We noticed the wing this morning.

If you believe it happened there, she should really see a vet, but if you can't I would personally immobilize the area using a fiqure-eight wrap, and leading one end under and up her underbelly to immobilize her from moving the wing for now. Pictures shown below:

I would keep her in a dog kennel, located in a soft padded, stressful free area with feed and water provided. To help promote bone healing, you may consider giving her some calcium in the form of, Tums, calcium citrate, or calcium gluconate. In addition, administering vitamins would be a good idea. Pay close attention to her for the next few days, monitoring her feces, and feed water intake. It may be good to weigh her every day if it doesn't cause her too much stress.

We redid the bandage based on your post. I snapped a couple of pics quick in between. My husband now thinks the break or dislocation may be higher on her wing.

I have dealt with and treated wild Canadian geese with broken wings, and in most cases their wings are completely drooping to the ground. She is holding her wing up pretty well. Unless you feel a break, it's possible she just sprained her wing. Either way, I think it would be good to put in a figure-eight for a week, or more, and see how it goes.
