I'm curious about something. Has anyone here actually had a critter tear through chicken wire? Or tear it apart? Not old worn out wire, but new and shiny and strong wire. If so, what sort of beast was it?

I know it is possible to tear it off. I wonder sometimes if the cautions about this stuff is due to a coon or dog or something tearing some loose from whatever it is connected to, rather than through it. I tested some the other day and I gotta tell ya, that is some strong stuff.

It also makes sense something could reach through it to nab something.

Yeah, but did you try to tear it apart with your teeth? I once had a woodchuck chew through it. Not exactly a salivating predator, but if a woodchuck can do it, so can anything else.

I asked this same questions a while ago, and I got a lot of response from people with real expierence with the chicken wire failling.

Same goes for the 2x4 welded wire fence, yes chicken are dumb enough to stick their head through when there is a predator on the other side, I learned that the hard way.

I've had dogs and some other animal (it was at night, I don't know what it was but probably raccoon) rip right through new chicken wire.

Had a raccoon chew a hole the size of a dinner plate through our first chicken wire cage. It was on the bottom of the cage, which sat on bricks, so there was only a narrow space between the chicken wire and the cement it was sitting on, but it managed to get under it, chew through, and injure our two ducks. Fortunately didn't kill them. They were brothers and one had a bad leg. The other one evidently tried to protect him and the coon stripped his feathers and skin from the top of his neck to his body, but he lived after that for 15 yrs. Ducks are tough! But never underestimate a raccoon.

Holy cow! I missed that post. Impressive damage to that cage.
