Chicken with bald back that happened overnight, no rooster in our coop..

Does she always spend the night in the nest?
Is she plucking belly feathers too?
How old is she?
Have you checked them for bugs?

Yes she always spends the night in there. I think I say her pluck a few but when she flaps or runs they come out. She is just over 12 months old. She has no bugs that I can find. I am thinking that it is a dramatic molt.

That's looking like a full blown molt. Hope your ambient temperatures are not too low. It looks like you still have green grass.

Why...is she picked on....or not enough room on the roost?

I think I see pin feathers emerging, so that would indicate molt, unless the new ones start disappearing too.

We are in Australia so it's summer

There is a perch in near the nests that she sits on with some other chooks. This morning she has more pin feathers and long strands emerging. Must just be an insanely dramatic molt!
