Hello,
I have a chicken (Buff Orpington) that looked like it's vent was getting clogged up by poop. I examined it, and the vent looked distended. There was also this off white stuff that was stuck onto the vent. As I tried cleaning it off, I noticed it was very hard to get off and caused some bleeding when I did get some off. I'm currently wondering if this isn't dried poop/gleet/pasty, but actually dead tissue. I got off as much as I could, but there was still some left. The area smelled pretty bad and as I was cleaning the area I noticed two worms (which I'm guessing were maggots at this point). I've done a bit of research (books and internet) and I've read about how horrid maggots can be (will be treating with screw worm spray or something similar as soon as I can get to the store to get some tomorrow).
Does anyone have any ideas about off white stuff that I can't pick off? Do I need to cut it out?
More information: She's about 1.5 years old. She seems pale and less active than normal. I cleaned the area with water and used some oil to try and free up the area. I cut off some feathers in the area that had poop stuck to them. I've got her separated from the rest of the flock right now. She was walking around and eating. The others didn't seem to pick on her or anything. When I was cleaning her vent, she pooped very clear liquid and threw up a few times.
Thank all for any help!
