Hi , I have a new mum with 5 baby chicks about 1 week old, we have started noticing a lot of feathers in the run, she doesn't seem stressed . but was wondering if this was normal after the chicks had hatched.

I have a broody that did the exact same thing although she did not rear chicks. She went broody then when she came out she went into a partial molt. after she was finished with the molt about two weeks later she began laying as usual again thank God.I asked this same question because my hen was not under stress nor did she lack nutrition.I came to the conclusion it was part of her regeneration process. Because. As soon as she finished the molt things went back to normal again. she was off her lay during her brood and during the partial molt. why a partial molt and not a full molt I don't know
I hope this helps. She soon will be back to normal again
Not to worry. Could be the hormones causing the partial molt also? Makes since to me. Best wishes

thank you for your reply, I was only worried due to she had done the pecking out of feathers when she went broody, the chicks I brought where fertilised eggs and she hatched them. so hope fully she will be back to normal soon . I now have another 2 hens gone broody lol but those 2 I keep just getting them out the coop all the time and bathing them in cool water .

She sounds exactly like my hen. I was concerned also but after the partial molt she started laying again. Just like normal. I'm thinking your bird will also be fine. Give her time to finish the partial molt and she should be back to laying about week an half after. Hope this helps and best wishes.
