Hi,
We've been having a heatwave for the past few days. Mom thought chickens were suffering from heat stress and dunked them in water. When I came over to check birds out I noticed one had a raspy voice, was persistently making noise, and would sneeze.
It sounded like this video :
According to the guy in the video he used VetRX on the hen and she recovered. I warmed up bottle in warm water then placed a drop under both wings and her head, gave her clean water and put some cold VetRX in the water. She started sneezing a lot more but hasn't really improved. I tried to feed her some chopped up garlic. I don't know that she ate it, her poo is watery.
She's a yellow buff orpington, she stopped being flighty and wandered around for a bit but when I placed her in box she didn't really resist. She kind of closed her eyes and just stood still. Sometimes she stops making the raspy noises, but again when I put the VetRX on she sneezed a lot more. I tried to chop up some garlic cooked in a pan but she didn't eat it I don't think. And they don't drink unless prompted. She also laid a shell-less egg after I isolated her.
This is the first day I've noticed symptoms but when I went out to close chickens I heard other birds breathing and it sounded like they had phlegm or were congested. So I have 6 birds I think have it. the 6 birds are mixed breeds: buff orpington, easter egger, wyandottes.
The coop was recently cleaned out, it's a metal 4x5 shed, the bedding is straw. Poo is watery and smaller amounts that normal. I attach a picture here.
I'm wondering if it's related to a new rooster joining the flock. Neighbor brought home a rooster but didn't have a coop so I took it in like a dummy instead of isolating it !
I'm picking up a dewormer at tractorsupply tomorrow in case it's gapeworm but I looked down the throat of one and really couldn't see anything. I don't know what to look for, would they just be really obvious wriggling red worms ?
I've isolated the wheezy ones from the ones that sound normal. Everyone is still sweating and panting. The new roo is in his own cage, I'm not sure he's sick but sometimes here a little rattling in his falling breath not sure if I'm just being paranoid now.
any ideas what this could be? or how long until i should be able to tell if vetrx is making a difference? do my poor chooks have a chance?
