Hi.. we purchased day old chicks from a hatchery in March. This was new to us as we have always adopted or purchased older hens. In the last month or so, Ive been wondering if we got a bad batch. They seem to not be laying at all and should be well on their way to doing that by now.

This evening, I noticed a lethargic hen gasping for air like an old hen would do with watery, bubbly eyes. I immediately threw her over the fence. ive had a polish hen have that in one eye and gave her two weeks worth of Polysporin eye drops and she healed nicely. We thought her feathers were getting in her eye. But this is different.

Any suggestions? We dont have farm centers around here that cater to chicken lovers.. so home remedies would be best for us.

They are only 5ish months old, so give them another 2 months or so and they should be laying.
Do you have a TSC near you? If so I would put her on electrolytes and Duramycin 10, a poultry antibiotic. It may be an upper respiratory infection. Keep an eye out for signs of it in the other birds.
