My seven chickens free range throughout my 1/3 acer backyard during the day, so naturally there is poop here and there. Also, I have two young boys, one of which is crawling. So... How dangerous is it to have the baby in the yard? Could he get a disease? How likely? Wouldn't the chickens need to be sick first? Would the dropping need to be fresh? What signs should I look for in terms of sick chickens that could get my kids sick? Thank you!

Do NOT let your child crawl around the yard with ANY kind of feces on the ground!
Here is something you might want to watch:

I was looking for an intelligent responds. Not ignorant judgment. It isn't like my kid is playing with the ****! Geez! I just have kids and chickens in the same area. I was looking for actual information about chicken diseases that are transmitable to humans. Please, if you can't have an intellgent conversation about this, don't bother commenting!

Here is a general link that may help.

Dawg53 is absolutely correct. Your child should not crawl where there is chicken poo. It may be helpful to put up a playpen next to you when you are outside to keep your baby contained and safely off the ground...just a thought!

Your pediatrician will be able to tell you.

I would use a playpen or a walker just wash the child's feet. If the child crawls in the yard with any animal my first concern would be worms. Salmonella. Would be a big concern. I know it is difficult to have children and chickens. I have 4 children and 40 chickens that share a 2 acre yard. Teach them to wash hands very well and good luck. It is possible. By the way any child that plays outdoors encounters poop. It sucks. But proper education makes it possible for kids to be kids

Yuck X4 is a very intelligent response. I do not judge people, it's not my job and there's no money in it. Now smile. Usually I post a problem and don't even get an answer, LOL

I feel that my chickens are as pure as the driven snow. However, we take precautions just in case. Yes they can carry things that can make a child or anyone ill. E. Coli is not something I would wish on anyone. And you can also get a mighty staph infection as well. It's best to teach your kids how to wash their hands really well, one son should wear shoes, and the baby should not be crawling around back there.
