I have 14 hens. 6 newbies about 1 yr old and 8 old ladies. I get 8 eggs on a good day. But ever since I had a snake swiping some eggs the old hens are moving some of the eggs to a non-nesting area and sitting on them all the time. Protecting them I guess. But we forget to check the whole coop sometimes and yesterday I found an old hen sitting on a dozen eggs! Just sharing some new info. You gotta check the whole coop for eggs! I have a newbie that lays wherever she darn well pleases - even in the yard! It's like Easter when you find an egg in the yard!

One of ours decided to fly to the secound level of our tree/goat house and start a clutch in the corner of the deck XD found 5 eggs just sitting there!

That does happen a lot. They don't actually move eggs, they just move where they are laying especially if they don't like their nestboxes. Sounds like you have some potential broody hens too?

having a snake come into the coop can be traumatic for your hens and they will find a place to lay that they feel is safer. I have had this happen this year when two snakes came in and took the eggs from under our broody hen. She now lays in the Hog house instead of the coop. The other hens sill lay in the nest boxes in the coop.

More of a question here...so around the time my welsummer became broody I got a new chicken. Amerucauna. She lays green eggs. So I kept finding the green eggs in the yard or inside the coop rather than the box. I just thought it was her (broody welsummer). But shes not been broody for about two weeks now and I continue to find them all over even pretty far from the coop. I'd blame it on the amerucauna except I catch her in the box laying and sometimes her eggs are in there. What's going on? Some chicken doesnt like her eggs?
