Starting letting our 13 ladies out for 2-3 hrs each night...
as you can see there's a ramp down front door, run gate has also been left open when time to go back into the house,, as it got darker they all piled near the house, we would have both front door and run gate door wide open, think these dummies would know enough to enter? some would, others would endlessly run around the perimeter of the fenced run trying to figure out how to get back in, there's always a few dummies that cant get it. when we first placed them in the house, they were in there 1 week solid, then let out in run for about another week or two, now letting em range some... they don't go far and it's going well but for the part of getting them back inside....I thought they were brighter...nope... I suppose in time they will figure it out..their problem solving skills seem to be about zero... have to give em treats to get em back in....

I believe chickens are much more intelligent than we take them for, so if they can't find their way in it may be because the door is not very obvious. I have a small door into my coop, and a big door (7'ish) into the run, and sometimes they can't figure out how to get in the run because they're behind the door. However, that doesn't make them dumb.
Try picking them each up and pushing them through the door
