Chickens at the 2012 Olympics

I think I'll watch the DCD of the Chinese opening from 2008.

There's quite a lot that could go wrong there. If they have sheep dog demonstrations that should be worth watching.

The scene they want to create is little more than an urban view of country life with a strong bias towards England. The real English country scene is about big mechanised farms and commuters who think that buying an overpriced converted barn is country living. It's good to see that the NHS nurses are being recognised but I don't know what their particular connection with the countryside is nor do I see why their presence should be seen as political.

I hope that McCartney doesn't make naff comments as he has done at two celebrations for the Queen. His only connection with the countryside has been illegal cannabis growing in Scotland. The UK has better songwriters than him.

The Olympics is overdone to a degree that induces a yawn in me at the mere mention of it. Like international football, it's a commercial operation that keeps a few people living high on the hog in five star hotels all year round at the expense of taxpayers in countries that think hosting the Olympics would be good thing.

Why wouldn't hosting them be a good thing ?

Good sides:

-Construction Contracts
-Massive Influx of Business
-Influx of Tourists (and their money)
-Lasting infrastructure
-World Prominence
-World Wide Tourism Campaign
-Jobs, lots of Jobs

Bad Sides:

-Security Risks
-Influx of Tourists (strain on infrastructure)
-Large Costs
-Many of the benefits are short lived, except for the infrastructure which now needs to be maintained
-Having to bus the bums out of the city lest they reflect badly on ones city (Atlanta)
-Having to carpool so that the cameras can actually see the mountains for the tourism campaign rather then a sickly yellow smog (LA)
-City Beautification Projects which ordinarily would be too good for your citizens (and then they'll probably want to keep them around)
-Foreigners Don't Tip

Well for the 1984 Olympics L.A. didn't spend a lot on venues we already had almost everything. The two venues we did build were payed for by sponsors.
One of the lasting things was it showed some companies that they could change their work shifts and have less workers coming in late. Some companies never went back to their old hours.
People here didn't carpool during or after the games.
The 1984 Olympics were a good thing for the Olympics and L.A.

The Blitz cost Great Britain and Northern Ireland 40,000 civilian lives over a period of eight months. At one point, London was bombed for 57 consecutive nights.

The Blitz (from German, "lightning") was the sustained strategic bombing of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (collectively the United Kingdom) by Nazi Germany between 7 September 1940 and 10 May 1941 during the Second World War. The capital, London, was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 57 consecutive nights and many towns and cities across the country followed. More than one million London houses were destroyed or damaged, and more than 40,000 civilians were killed, almost half of them in London.

Children were evacuated from London to live with families in the country. Their parents were either in the armed forces or left behind to face the blitz. My home town was badly bombed and I can remember the remains of bombed and burnt buildings standing for years there and in other towns. Many property owners were never traced. Unexploded bombs were found frequently and still turn up every few years.
