Last night an opossum got into our coop. Luckily the chickens alerted us and we were able to get out to the coop quickly. After taking an inventory of our flock we found that it had gotten a hold of our Polish Chicken's bottom.

She only has a few tail feathers left & her bottom is bare. There was no blood. I did notice some white drips coming from her bottom.

This morning we quarantined her with electrolyte water, regular water & food. She is acting just fine eating, drinking & exploring her new home. We inspected her thoroughly today and found her bottom is in not so good shape.

There is still no blood but her bottom is oozing what I believe to be poop. Not a ton but the feathers that she has around the area are matted & wet. It looks like part of her inside is slightly out. When she struggled a little it ballooned up a bit. Once she calmed down it went back inside.

Here is an image of her bottom. Since this picture I cleaned her bottom up a lot more & sprayed her with the blue antiseptic spray.

Please let me know your thoughts & what else we should do for her. We've had chickens for a year and this is our first injury.

Thank you in advance!
Heather

Update...
She laid an egg but now her bulge is even bigger and sticking out.

Other than that she is still acting normal. Do we dare try to push it back in? Will it go back in on its own? Is there anything we can do?

Try rubbing some sugar on it. It will help with the swelling. Just make sure you keep the prolapse nice and clean. Keep her separate if you can to prevent pecking.

Thank you so much for replying. I'm sorry to have to ask, but when you say to rub sugar on her bottom do you mean sugar water or grains of sugar?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for checking back on her. She is still acting normal, eating, drinking even laying an egg. It seems that her prolapse has gone back in even after her last egg. Last night we cleaned her up real good and I tried to help it along a bit but decided to see what nature would do over night.

She is still by herself in a semi dark room. We continue to bathe her bottom and apply an antibiotic spray. Tomorrow I'm going to trim the few matted feathers she has that I just can't seem to get clean. She is such a trooper and taking everything in stride. Her prolapse did bulge out a little right before her last bath but went right back in on it's own.

Since I've never seen a naked chicken bottom before I've been doing a lot of image searches so I have something to compare hers to in the morning. On the same note I've also not had my nose as close to other chicken bottoms as I have to hers. Ever since right after the opossum attack I've noticed a kind of fishy smell when I'm close to her bottom. I'm hoping this is normal since it is something I noticed immediately just moments after the attack.

Your sugar trick worked really well. Thank you so much for the suggestions and information. You have been so helpful!

If all goes well I'm planning on keeping her separate until her feathers start to come back in.

Other than electrolyte water, antibiotic spray and keeping her separate, is there anything else we should or could be doing for her?

Thanks again!
Heather
