About a month ago I bought 8 chicks from an individual. I kept them in the house and away from the rest of my flock. Every single chick died. They would be fine one minute and dead the next. I contacted the person I bought them from and they told me theirs had died too so I'm assuming something was wrong with them. The last one died about a week ago.

Last Saturday I noticed a 3 year old hen not acting right. She was unable to jump up on the roost like she always does. She had a very nasty butt. I cleaned it up and separated her. I gave her Oxytetracycline antibiotic in her water but I don't think she drank much of it. Today she's almost dead. I have no clue why or what else to do.

We had 10 chicks to hatch Easter. They have been raised by hens. They have been perfectly fine. I went to let them all out to free range and 1 is dead. Nothing looks out of the ordinary with it. I don't know why it died nor do I know what to do about it.

It's been really rainy here lately so the run is betty muddy. But they free range during the day. Temos have been in the 70's the last few days and 60's at night. They have shelter, non medicated food, clean water, etc. I have not ever given any of my chicks or chickens wormer, or anything of the sort. Ever. I did put a few drops of ACV in the 5 gallons of water with the adult birds in it after I found the sick hen.

The only issue I could think might be a problem is that when I was cleaning out the chicks bin that I got from the individual (that they all died), I very foolishly dumped the shavings out on the ground in the woods...not thinking about the other birds being into it later because at the time they weren't allowed to free range because we were in the process of putting a fence around our garden. Yes, it was a dumb thing to do and I do realize that they may have gotten sick by scratching around in the stuff leftover by the 8 chicks that died. I admit, it was a stupid move, but its already done now.

I don't want the rest of my flock to get sick and die. Any suggestions?

Hi Tchelle,
Please describe or post pictures of poop. Anything odd?
Also, say where you are, it may help with the diagnosing or treatment.
Can you consider getting a necropsy on your next dead chicken?

When I had the chicks in the brooder in the house there was nothing in they're poop that I found unusual. The hen that's not doing too well is diarrhea when she has a bowel movement which is not often cause she's not eating. I went to the feed store and got some Corid and started treating her and the whole flock with it. Started giving hen Nutridrench too. She seems to maybe have perked up just a little.

I live in Georgia
