chickens eggs have dead babys

I have a hen that has been sitting on about 16 eggs for a good while now. well she started to break the eggs and eat the shells and the eggs that she ate did not look fertile. I checked the eggs and lots of them were full of liquid so I threw them out. but there has been some eggs she broke and ate the shell and there were dead baby's in them. the baby's looked like they were dead before she broke the egg. they were fully formed and should have been hatching any day. any thoughts about what could have happened? do you think she knew some how the baby's were dead before breaking and eating the shell? this is her first time sitting on eggs.
