I have 11 chickens as a 4H project and last summer I noticed some mites on them. I immediately went and got cans of sevin powder and followed instructions for cleaning the coop and treating the birds. I keep my coop very clean and collect droppings every so often. The mites seemed gone for a while and they've come back over the winter. Since it has been so cold I haven't been able to thoroughly clean the coop and bathe chickens. Is there something else that I could use besides sevin powder? It didn't seem to work the last time. I love holding my chickens but I don't want to while they have mites. I also show them at the county fair and I don't want to spread mites! these also aren't red mites but theyre black and super small, almost like a speck of pepper.

you have to do dust them every week, because they eggs are hatching and you have to kill them all,

i usually throw in their coop ashes from wood and they take bath in it and that seems to do the trick also,

Sevin is the most effective mite treatment on the market. It needs to be done at least 2-3 times 10 days apart to be effective. On the days you treat the birds you also need to empty their coop of all bedding and treat the coop, as well. I like to use Adam's spray-on Flea and Tick on the coop and roosts. When you add the bedding back into the coop after treatment, put it in lightly because you are just going to be doing all this again in another 10 days. Sprinkle a little Sevin in with the bedding. It's a nasty course of treatment, but it does take out the mites, and you need to do that because mites can be deadly to birds.

Good luck.
