Chickens in Glendale, AZ - We're on the right track!

Any update? Talked to a lady today and she said we can now keep chickens as of a cuple weeks ago. Acording to her lot size she can have 5. Im in zone 8 if that helps.

It's not official until the ordinance has been changed, council is giving staff up to 2 months from January 19, 2016 to create a new ordinance.

I just got the following correspondence from Jamie Aldama's assistant (ocotillo district rep.) I wasn't even aware that there was a citizen participation process, and I'm pretty ****** about not having had the opportunity to attend.

Background.
This is a proposed Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) to amend the zoning ordinance to permit chickens in all single-family residential zoning districts. The ZTA is in response to a Council Item of Special Interest (CIOSI) that City Council expressed during the City Council Workshop of January 19, 2016 to allow chickens in Glendale.

As part of the Citizen Participation process for the ZTA, a neighborhood meeting held on August 17, 2016 at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers.

Approximately 85 people attended the neighborhood meeting. Comment cards were provided at the meeting. There were approximately 14 cards returned in favor of chickens and approximately 45 cards returned in opposition to chickens.

Next Steps.
As the applicant is the City of Glendale, the Planning Division will complete the Citizen Participation Final Report.

To introduce this project to the Planning Commission a Workshop will be scheduled to study the topic. The Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Since this is a Workshop intended to study a topic, no public testimony is taken. The Workshop is open to the public.

I don't live in Glendale but rather Maricopa County close to Phoenix, but I've been sort of following the topic because I'm interested in seeing everyone everywhere allowed to have chickens. What's the situation with the comment cards where you said 45 cards were returned in opposition to chickens? The way I was reading it earlier the City of Glendale was allowing chickens and just needed to write the ordinance so I'm wondering why the cards with yay or nay.

I'm fairly new to raising birds myself and when I was looking up regs for my area I came across the prohibition in Glendale and thought it was the dumbest thing ever. Gosh if we had a dime for every ridiculous prohibition out there we'd all be millionaires. I'm looking forward to the day when Glendale residents can keep chickens since the more people that raise them, the more healthy eggs will be floating around and the more leverage chicken owners everywhere will have. I certainly hope the new ordinance allowing chickens is written soon.

Yeah, I was at the council workshop in January. All council members agreed they had no issue with it. I was under the impression that they were doing "research" to define what the legislative changes to zoning would be. As for the cards, I don't think it was a definitive vote, more of an opinion gathering process. There's still hope, but we need more pro-chicken supporters to join the process, otherwise we'll lose. The thing that sucks is that most people are massively uninformed and don't understand what actual chickens are. The government doesn't exactly go out of its way to educate the public.

The city of Glendale, AZ Planning and Zoning are reviewing the zoning and will possibly be making amendments to the code for backyard chickens in all single-family residential housing in Glendale, AZ.
We need support, we need Glendale residents to sign petitions and volunteer to collect signatures from their neighbors. The neighbors don't have to want chickens, just sign that they are okay if their neighbors have chickens.
There is a facebook page Glendale Backyard Farmers Movement, see link below, all information about upcoming meetings will be posted there. If you reside in Glendale, please ask to join to stay updated. If you already reside in a city that allows chickens your input is valuable too. The city of Glendale needs to know if you've had any issues with neighbor complaints or your experience of having a neighbor with chickens.
There are a lot of naysayers and fear mongers who don't understand backyard chickens, who are voicing their opinion for not supporting this.

On February 7, 2017 City of Glendale Council decided not to move forwarded with the chicken ordinance.

Backyard Chickens are still illegal unless you are zoned for it in the City of Glendale, AZ....
