Chickens in Literature

Just last night I was listening to The Green Mamba, a detective story by Edgar Wallace, and the detective spends a whole evening telling the criminal about the merits of his Buff Orpingtons. I’m pretty sure the chickens have already been everywhere in stories but I didn’t notice them until I had some of my own!
