Hi,
I am new to chickens, got 8 chicks last Spring! One died right away
and two were roosters so we butchered them, as they were both incredibly aggressive and it didn't calm down. Since then we have had 5 healthy and cute hens. 2 barred rocks, 2 easter eggers and 1 brown leghorn. I just rescued 9 other chickens from a local lady and they lived with a rooster- they are all missing feathers and have bald patched on their backs from being harassed so I am trying to make them healthy again and then they will be given to good homes at the local ag expo! I LOVE keeping chickens and I hope to get a much larger flock (30 +) next year. Its tricky where we live because temps get over 100 in summer and below 0 in winter! Not sure what the best breeds are, I did research a lot but the brown leghorn does not seem very cold tolerant. They have a really nice coop with ventalation and 6 nesting boxes and plenty of perches. It faces away from the wind and there is a lot of shade in summer and in winter they can go around to the south facing side and get some sun. The brown leghorn just got really sick and I have no idea why! Nothing has changed and I isolated her but its worse and worse and I think she might die this evening. I am going to post about it, because I would like to prevent this from happening again. Love this community and so far its been super helpful!
