I just noticed a hen of mine with a neck wound that looks pretty serious. I was just outside in my coop and was giving my chickens some hugs and some worms before they went to sleep and I noticed one of my hens feathers looked odd and when I looked closer she had a big wound on her neck. Im constantly out in the pen and this was the first time i noticed it. My local feed store is closed and I live in a small town with no other options but I have some wound wash, a thing of bactine and also some dog and cat antifungal antibacterial wound spray here at home already. Would anyone know if these are safe to put on her. I've got her inside my home in a big dog kennel so she wont be messed with but I want to get it fixed up and cleaned up as quickly as possible especially because its been raining here all week and so its its been muddy and shes one of my babies who likes to play out in and i want to avoid infection I just don't want to use anything that might harm her. She's about 4 months. Thank you in advance!

Gosh I'm sorry that wound is really bad. If you want to let her back outside, I'd keep her in a grassy area instead of a muddy area, or if she has to be in a muddy area then gently wrap it with gauze if she won't try to mess with it.

I'd personally give her starter feed for the extra protein, let it heal up a little more for a week, and then put something gentle on it like this: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rooster-booster-poultry-wound-spray-16-oz-1124366

I think I'm going to keep her inside for at least a few days to keep an eye on her. I have some starter feed also so I will give her some of that tonight and then go to tractor supply first thing in the morning! Thank

I have some starter feed so I'll give her some of that tonight and I can run to tractor supply first thing in the morning! I don't think I'll put her back outside quite yet just because i want to be able to keep a close eye on her at least for a few days. Thank you so very much!!!

Do you know how she got the wound?

What is the wound wash you have? Most products you can use on poultry, but it's a good idea to name what you have.

Clean the wound with an antiseptic, trim feathers away from the wound if needed so it stays cleaner and you can see it better. Once cleaned, apply triple antibiotic ointment.
Leave the wound unwrapped.

Cage her within the coop/run on clean dry bedding where she will be secure from predators but is still near the flock so she's not forgotten. Provide her with her own food/water.

Thank you and i will definitely do that. Do you think she would be alright inside with me tonight just because I'm not sure I have what I need to give her a secluded spot in the coop without needing to get some things. I will definitely run outside right now and see though. Also the wound wash I have is from Walmart. It's equate brand advanced wound wash.

I think she will be fine being inside with you overnight so you can monitor her. The wound wash looks fine to me, I'd use it.

Keep us posted on how she's doing.

Just wanted to give yall an update on my little hen....she is doing really good! I have her with the flock still but in her own section so that she doesn't become unfamiliar, but stays unpicked on. I did give her some of her regular food but i also gave her some starter feed and she ate both of them no problem. This morning first thing i went and got some vetericyn and I cleaned the wound with the wound wash then applied the vetericyn. I just applied it for the 3rd time today and we will repeat until it's not needed anymore. I did try putting some gauze roll loosely around her neck but that didn't last 2 minutes before she was just not having it so I took it off to avoid any further damage to her neck or stress for her. She hasn't seemed to lose any of her strength or spark or anything that would be the least bit concerning which is good. I let her sit on my shoulder while I worked outside for a bit today just to get her out of her seclusion for a bit which she loved and I always enjoy myself. Fingers crossed we keep going down this path of good progress! Thank you everyone for yalls advice and concern. I really appreciate it! Yall definitely helped me go from panicked to I got this which I can never thank yall enough! I probably won't post for the next few days as long as everything keeps going as it is right now. If there are any changes good or bad I will let yall know. Thanks again! 🐔💜
