Hi. New here. Trying to get set up. I found a posting on Craigslist for local pullets the age I would like. Question is, when (if) I go look at them, how can I tell if they are healthy, etc? I've never had hens before and am not sure what to look for. Ad says they have various (breeds named) pullets at 10 to 12 weeks.

Thanks! I can't wait to get started!

Welcome Stephanie

Since they will be your first chickens, you don't have to think about infecting your flock. In review of the potential hens, look for:
- scales on legs (mites)
- sneezing
- head shaking
- discharge from eyes/notes/beak
- swollen or blackened comb and wattles
These are all signs of illness of one form or another.
If you bring them home, remember chickens aren't great "change" animals and they will be stressed for a couple days. I'd try a bit of electrolytes/sugar in the water for a few days to help with stress. You'll find powder at TSC or Farm&Home for about $2.
What breed are you seeking?

Thanks for the information. It will be a big help to me! I emailed each poster asking for pictures - we'll see!

I'm looking for Australorps, Wyandottes or Orpingtons.
