Hello all. I have 6 new Hampshire red chickens about 6 or 7 months old. They all lay healthy hardy eggs everyday. Over the last couple days 4 of my chickens have been standing on the roof of my coop at night and not going inside. They are friendly chicken to humans and with each other. I do not understand why they are not Goin inside when the sun goes down. Please help!!!!!

We are so glad you joined our flock.
What is the size of your coop?
Have you noticed any signs of mites?

There are no signs of mites. They are very clean as well. I cleaned out the coop to see if maybe it got a little too dirty but that's not the case. The coop length with the run is 70 inches long and I believe the actual coop inside the run is 40 by 30 inches. But during the day they are out of the run and in a fenced in are that is 15 feet by 10feet

woah.....That is too small for them.
That is probably why they are not going in it, too hot maybe?
A coop should be closer to 4 square feet PER bird.

I was wondering why asked about mites? My chickens have been doing the same thing
Is your coop too small too?

I asked about mites because mites live in the cracks of the coop and only come out to eat the birds at night.
If they have bugs eating on them at night they may not want to go back in there.

we don't pen ours up at night, so they just perch any where they can. I know this is not ideal, but we are currently working on their coop and plan to have them in a converted shed, 8 x 10 foot. They free range in the backyard all day. New to all of this, so I'm learning as I go!
