My Chickens are not clipped but they seem to of found a new roost. They go up on top of the Chicken run and want to stay up there. If I did not get them down they would probably would stay up there at night. They did well going into the coop and will go in here if I shut the run door. Door is on a timer and was not working for a little while but now I have to go make sure they are in the run just to hope they go into the coop. Any idea on why they are doing this?

My Wyandottes used to do this and some ended in tragedy. I don't know why they do it, but I found my only way to break them of it was to herd them in the coop while it's still daylight (BEFORE they fly up there) and shut the door so they can't come out. After about two weeks of this they forgot about roosting on the roof and began putting themselves away correctly.

I have had some do the same thing, mostly my Leghorns. They like to get to the highest place they can. This is how I solved my problem. I made a habit of giving them treats in the evening when I collect the eggs and get them in. They come running for treats. I make a sound (sing or whistle) and have a bucket. I toss some treats in. Tricky.
