chickens that defend themselves

we had a opposum attack that ended in 6 dead chickens and 2 dead opposums

my question is : how do the people that have all those game birds staked out not lose any to predators in this way? i feel like we must have wimpy chickens or something.....

Things just happen I lost 2 of my hens to a opossum.
